It's all about the eyes...Get noticed in your face covering.
We don't really have a lot of choice in whether we are going to have to wear a face mask for the foreseeable future, so let's embrace it and make the most of it!
I have put together a few makeup hints and tips that will help you accentuate your brows and eyes, because let's face it...that's all we are going to be able to see!
So, to keep things nice and easy today, let's chat about brow products, eyeliners and kohl's. I don't want to overwhelm you so we will leave eyeshadows, eyelashes and long wearing foundations & concealers until next time.
BROWS
Your brows are going to be super important so even if you chose not to colour them, making sure your brows are plucked, trimmed and combed through gives them a great head start. Invest in an all-in-one brow kit like this from our Donna May London accessories range, which then leaves no excuse but to keep them in check.
You will then need to find a brow product that suits you...check out the following to decide which one will suit you best. I have also popped up my favourite product for each recommendation .
Brow Pencils - Confidence and a steady hand are key to using a brow pencil. Great for brows that need a defining edge and a neat tapered end (keep the pencil sharp) lightly stroke the pencil upwards through the hair, filling any hairless gaps as you go.
Best Suits: Strong brows, particularly dark hair, but stay away if you want a super natural look.
Ease of use: 3/5
Brow Liquids
A fairly new concept in the world of brows. Brow liquid is designed to last longer than a day, brilliant for holidays and exercise fans, it really can last up to 3 days. Waterproof and even smudge proof it's the lazy person's paint-and-go dream!
Literally applied using the applicator it comes with, paint it evenly onto the brow hairs to sculpt your brow into the style you want, let it dry and go! They usually come off with an oil based cleanser.
Ease of use: 3/5
Brow Waxes
Great for those roaming brows that like to wander, waxes come in a variety of shades to match your hair colour. Firstly brush them through and then, using an angled brush, use the wax to coat the brows. Start at the beginning, take up to the peak and down to the end. Perfect for creating a strong styled brow and easy to wipe off if you make a mistake.
Ease of use: 4/5
Brow Mascara
My current favourite through lockdown and also the easiest & quickest application of all. Literally comb the colour through the brows in an upward direction slowly moving towards the outer edge. Suits everybody, but particularly people with fair brows who need to add a hint of natural looking colour & thickness.
Ease of use: 5/5
Brow nibbed pens
Are not as scary as they sound, they are more like watercolours rather than permanent markers! These are great for giving a light wash of colour, simply draw them on as you would use a felt tip, great for drawing individual hairs without looking like a werewolf!
A safe bet for anyone nervous of using any brow colours and perfect for adding extra brow hairs.
Ease of use: 4/5
Brow powder
Application of brow powder gives a super natural look and is less obvious then other products. Using the edge of angled brow brush (most come with a brush) add the colour, remembering to tap the brush to release an excess product, and brush through the brows. Concentrate on the sparser areas at the beginning of your brows and any bare areas you want to cover.
Ease of use: 4/5
EYES... it's all about the eyes!
Eyeliner
Either a nice waterproof Kohl pencil or liquid liner will look fab with just mascara. I love this look, always reminding me of those stylish Parisans!
Run the pencil as close as possible to your lash line....thickening the line towards the outer edges and slightly taking the tip upwards to create that gorgeous cat eye effect. Practice makes perfect with this one.
My 2 preferred at home liquid eyeliners are from Stila, the Micro tip one is great for anyone with hooded eyes and limited space for eyeliner.
Kohl
If you would prefer a softer, even smudgier effect then use a black or coloured kohl pencil using the same technique as the eyeliner above. Why don't you try and experiment with some coloured eyeliners - these can look amazing and will definitely make your eyes pop above your face covering.
A few that I love are...
A great deep plum.purple colour, looks amazing with green and hazel eyes.
A great 'Mildew green' for brown eyes.
Who doesn't love a Navy blue?
And the all rounder...
When it comes to black kohl, if you want to make an impact, as well as lining the upper lash line. Colour in the top and bottom waterline (the rim inside your eye) taking it tightly into the corners, this will create a real smokey look.
I also love these two...waterproof is best, to keep it from smudging.
Over the next few weeks I will be showing you all some Mask Makeups using the above ideas so keep an eye on our Instagram and FaceBook pages.
Please also send us yours, if you have found any new ways or techniques to make yourselves up since wearing masks, then we would love to see them.
